PDO threads

PDO (Polydioxanone) is a biodegradable synthetic polymer traditionally used as sutures in surgery. PDO has been around for over three decades and used daily in hospitals for wound closure and cataract surgical procedures.

When used for aesthetic purposes it is a highly effective, safe, non-surgical technique that lifts and tightens the skin, redefines facial contours, induces collagen production and lipolysis. It is often referred to as a “non-surgical facelift”, creating a more youthful appearance.

The duration depends on the age of the patient, lifestyle, quality of tissues, medication and general health and diet. PDO thread treatment is a continuous process and regular additional threads are required at 6 to 9 month intervals in order to maintain the effect. With proper maintenance the results can last between 2-3 years.

PDO Threads are classified as CE Class III medical devices and like all foreign material entering the body there are temporary side effects associated with PDO Thread Therapy which can include: pain, bruising, discomfort, feeling of irritation, erythema, oedema, itching, fever, scabs and inflammation. Granulomas can occur when the condition of the product is changed by neglecting the management of the product, which can aggravate existing inflammation.

​WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED WITH PDO THREADS & HOW DOES IT WORK? PDO Threads can be used to contour the face, treat wrinkles, improve skin quality, reduce pores, tighten the skin, reduce the double chin (submental fat pad) and to create a V shape Jawline. Other indications include tissue healing, tendon trauma (tennis elbow, golf elbow), frozen shoulder and muscle relaxation (masseters). COMMON AREAS TREATED WITH PDO THREADS: • Mid and lower face lift • Forehead wrinkle filling and brow lifting • Jawline and jowl contouring/tightening • Neck and double chin tightening/fat pad reduction • Naso-labial fold lifting and filling • Marionette line filling and volumising. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and takes around 45 – 60 minutes, depending on what treatment is required. A Spiral 3D or 4D multi-directional USP 2-0 thickness barbed cannula Cog thread is used to give an immediate mechanical lift. The lift will continue to take place via wound contraction, over the next three to four months – an instant lift and a delayed lift will occur. The threads dissolve after 6 months with maximum contraction at three to four months. Plain mono threads inserted into the dermis or sub-cutaneous tissue result in neocollagenesis and neo-vascularisation. The threads aim to stimulate new collagen and elastin production, producing an overall rejuvenated effect.

Only trained medical professionals should perform this procedure. GDC, GMC and NMC registered professionals. Non-medical staff should not perform this treatment.

Although they are effective on their own, PDO Threads can also be combined with other treatments for optimum results, including HA fillers, anti-wrinkle injections, PRP, micro-needling, facial peels, and Profhilo® tissue modulator.

The best clients for this procedure are men and women who are experiencing wrinkles on the forehead, dropping of the brow, sagging of the mid and lower face, visible jowls, and loose skin on the neck.
