Patients guide to Anti-wrinkle treatment

A guide for patients treated with BOTOX  (Botulin toxin type A)

What is an anti-wrinkle injection?

These are a prescription medicine, initially used to treat a number of medical conditions within the body before being adapted to aesthetics.  It works by partially blocking nerve impulses and the effect for the patient depends upon where it is injected.  If injected into a muscle (including the bladder) it will reduce excess contractions of that muscle.  If injected into the skin in the underarm area it will reduce how much sweat is produced.  More commonly it is used in the facial area to reduce frown line or deep furrows around the eye and forehead areas , lines around  lips as this relaxes the muscles and also it is effective to tighten skin around the neck and jaw line (this is known as Nefertiti neck lift).

What should I look like after the treatment?

Like all medicines, anti-wrinkle injections can cause adverse events although it is very rare .  Following treatment, you may experience local reaction at the site of injection (e.g. bumps/bruising following injection under the skin or into the muscle; some people may experience headaces ). This should pass fairly quickly.

In general, adverse events occur within the first few days following injection and last only for a short time.  In rare cases adverse events may last for several months or longer.

Does treatment require anaesthesia?

No treatment only takes a few minutes and uses very fine needles.

When should I see a result?

On average 3-5 days and for the full affect allow 2 weeks.   Effects typically visible for those with fine lines like shallow crows’ feet or faint forehead lines than those with deep frown lines and heavy wrinkles.

How long will it last?

This depends on the dosage used  and the strength of the patients’ muscle. On average effect can last between 12 to 20 weeks  We tailor the needs to achieve the best results with a natural look considered.
